David Chiedu Agbakoba

Solar Jooce was founded in 2008 and its activities throughout Nigeria are co-ordinated by Dave.

Dave has garnered valuable experience working in various fields, ranging from a Fortune 500 consumer goods power house (Procter & Gamble), to insurance and retail. Dave's qualifications include a Bachelor's degree in Estate Management (University of Nigeria), and an MBA from Purdue University, Indiana (USA).

His one true passion, however, is being at the vanguard of solving chronic power problems that plague much of Africa.

A keen interest in renewable energy was rekindled while attending the Bauer College of Business at the University of Houston (Texas, USA), where in 2005, he earned an Accounting Certificate in Energy (ACE) Diploma from the Bauer Center for Executive Development. Although renewable energy sources were not at the core of the program, they were addressed in their various forms as growing in prominence.

The lure of blazing a trail in the relatively new and growing field of renewable energy - and using this for the benefit of millions of Africans living without electricity - proved irresistible from that point on.

Dave's interest in the environment started early on while touring windmills in Amsterdam (the Netherlands) and rice terraces in Banaue (the Philippines) as a boy.

This awareness of the environment and its issues also led to his winning a prize on October 15, 1996 from a British Council organised contest, themed 'Focus on our Environment'.

Join the 36-State Tour

The Solar for the Masses expedition has come and gone. In 17 days (not 36 as we had thought!), we traversed the 36 states of Nigeria and the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja. The road trip started on Wednesday, May 26, 2010 and ended on Friday, June 11, 2010.

Team Solar jooce covered a total distance of 9,309km. As we drove through villages in every state to provide basic solar appliances to primary healthcare centres and micro-businesses - and to recruit rural women for training as Solar Engineers - our objectives were two-fold:

1. to show the possibilities of using solar to meet the Millennium Development Goals [End poverty & Hunger; Gender Equality; Universal Education; Child Health; Maternal Health; Environmental Sustainability; Global Partnership]

2. Regenerate economic, educational and social activity at the grassroot level.

We were (and still are) are guided by three important quotes:

"Power supply is crucial in stimulating economic growth, ensuring poverty reduction and employment generation, and enhancing economic competitiveness." - Nigeria's President, Goodluck Ebele Jonathan
