Solar Jooce presents Solar for the Masses to Lagos State government
Solar Jooce has continueed to involve States of the Federation in its Solar for the Masses campaign - a drive through all 36 states in the country to deliver a total of 3,600 sponsored solar lamps/phone chargers to rural communities.
On Wednesday, April 14, 2010, Solar Jooce presented its combined solar lamp/phone charger to the Lagos State government (Ministry of Rural Development).
The company has asked all 36 states in Nigeria to recommend a community in their state that is most in need of solar illumination. From the list of recommended communities, either a rural clinic, a micro-enterprise or a household will be selected to receive a combined solar lamp/phone charger - as a pilot case for the potential of solar energy in transforming and energising rural areas.
The ultimate objective is to use solar power to revive rural-based micro-businesses (and therefore, the economy), and to lift rural citizens out of a needless cycle of poverty. Other objectives would be to substitute the use of kerosene lighting with solar lamps in order to protect the rural populace from kerosene-related illnesses such as respiratory and eye diseases. The harmful effects of kerosene fumes to the environment can also not be ignored.
Finally, Solar Jooce committed to identifying and training rural women (illiterate, semi-literate or literate) to become Solar Engineers so that this specialised set of people are able to tap into the increasing pool of "green jobs" available locally and globally. These jobs include openings as technicians, troubleshooters and solar panel installers.
