The Guardian: Solar Jooce to provide alternative power source to rural dwellers

Solar jooce, a social enterprise, has unveiled its plans to embark upon a campaign on the use of alternative source of power as an easy way to end Nigeria's unending power crisis.

The Managing Director of the company, Mrs. Anne Agbakoba-Osagie, said that Solar Looce was going to drive around the 36 states in Nigeria to deliver solar appliances to a total of 3,600 rural homes.

She said solar energy is the solution to the problem of energy and capable to providing alternative source of power to over two billion people.

She hinted that the company was formed to enable Nigeria's poorest people gain access to free, alternative, clean, renewable power such as solar energy.

Osagie stated: "Currently, two billion people have no access to electricity, but the huge potential of solar energy can be the solution to the energy needs of many. Poor family in Africa burns around 55 litres of kerosene a year to light their home. Not many people know that respiratory diseases, caused by toxic kerosene fumes, kill 1.6 million women and children each year. That is one death every 20 seconds. Kerosene smoke also damages the eyes and the environment. Just replacing 2500 lanterns with solar lamps will result in far better health for rural dwellers, and reduce CO2 pollution by 100 tonnes over five years".

Join the 36-State Tour

The Solar for the Masses expedition has come and gone. In 17 days (not 36 as we had thought!), we traversed the 36 states of Nigeria and the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja. The road trip started on Wednesday, May 26, 2010 and ended on Friday, June 11, 2010.

Team Solar jooce covered a total distance of 9,309km. As we drove through villages in every state to provide basic solar appliances to primary healthcare centres and micro-businesses - and to recruit rural women for training as Solar Engineers - our objectives were two-fold:

1. to show the possibilities of using solar to meet the Millennium Development Goals [End poverty & Hunger; Gender Equality; Universal Education; Child Health; Maternal Health; Environmental Sustainability; Global Partnership]

2. Regenerate economic, educational and social activity at the grassroot level.

We were (and still are) are guided by three important quotes:

"Power supply is crucial in stimulating economic growth, ensuring poverty reduction and employment generation, and enhancing economic competitiveness." - Nigeria's President, Goodluck Ebele Jonathan
